The basics
What is a Rabies Titre Test?
A blood test that measures your pet's rabies antibodies, not the virus.
A rabies titre test (also written rabies titer test, and often called the FAVN test) is a blood test that measures the level of rabies antibodies in your dog's or cat's blood.
Antibodies are proteins the immune system makes in response to rabies vaccination. Measuring them shows how strongly your pet's body has responded to the vaccine.
Your vet takes a small blood sample and a laboratory measures the antibody level. Some countries ask to see this result as part of their pet entry paperwork.

Country rules · From India
When Is a Rabies Titre Test Required?
It depends on where your pet is going. Here are the rules for the UK, Europe, the USA and the UAE.

Your vet takes blood, a lab measures antibodies, and the result joins your paperwork.
Step 1: Vet visit
Blood sample collected
Your veterinarian draws a small blood sample from your pet, similar to routine blood work.
Step 2: Transit
Sample sent to the laboratory
The sample travels to a laboratory equipped to measure rabies antibody levels.
Step 3: Analysis
Antibody level measured
The laboratory measures the rabies antibody response present in the sample.
Step 4: Documentation
Result added to travel records
Your veterinarian helps you understand how the result fits your destination's paperwork.

Why is an RTT Required for International Pet Travel?
Some countries want proof your pet's rabies vaccine worked before they let it in.
Many destination countries and travel routes ask for documented proof of your pet's rabies antibody level, in addition to their rabies vaccination record, before allowing a pet to enter.
A rabies titre test provides that documented evidence. Where it's required, the result becomes part of your pet's travel paperwork alongside their other health records.

The science
What the Blood Test Actually Measures
How well your pet's antibodies block the rabies virus in a lab test.
It does not test your pet for the rabies virus itself.
Antibodies
Y-shaped proteins your pet's immune system makes after rabies vaccination.
Binding tips
The arms of each antibody latch onto the virus and block it from infecting cells.
Rabies virus (lab only)
Used only inside the controlled laboratory test, never given to your pet.
In the laboratory, your pet's blood serum is mixed with rabies virus to see how well its antibodies neutralise (block) the virus. The result is reported as an antibody level, often called a titre.
The minimum accepted antibody level is set by each destination's rules. Ask your vet or the testing laboratory how to read your pet's result.

Rabies Titre Test Questions, Answered
Requirements vary by destination country and route. Check the current requirements for your destination before travelling.
What is a rabies titre test?
A rabies titre test (also spelled rabies titer test) is a blood test that measures the level of rabies antibodies your pet's immune system has produced, usually after vaccination. It is often called the FAVN test (Fluorescent Antibody Virus Neutralisation) when performed at an approved laboratory.
Why does my pet need a rabies titre test?
Many countries and travel routes require proof of rabies antibody levels before allowing a pet to enter, in addition to standard rabies vaccination records. A rabies antibody test for dogs or cats provides that documented evidence.
